Sheetfed Offset Press Operator

Press Operator. Full-time, first shift. 

The Printing Port is a commercial printing and direct mail production company seeking hard-working, motivated individuals to join our team. We are currently seeking a full-time Offset Press Operator. Previous Press experience is a MUST. You will be responsible for running a Heidelberg SM 72, 5 color sheetfed offset press with Aqueous Coater and Perfecting unit. This position is 1st shift M-F some weekend work may be required during peak seasons.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Demonstrate the ability to quickly and efficiently make ready including:
a.     Inspection of bluelines or other proofs
b.     Inspection of paper to assure conformance to specified requirements
c.     Inspection of plates
d.     Set up feeder, including sucker position, pile height, side guides & head stops, for efficient operation.
e.     Set rollers for correct color stripe
f.      Measure blanket thickness with Cady gauge
g.     Calculate proper blanket packing
h.     Measure roller durometer
i.      Bend plates
j.      Hang plates in printing units and set proper tension
k.     Apply ink to the fountains
l.      Use CIP 3 data to set ink fountains and adjust accordingly
m.    Add water to tanks and check conductivity and PH and adjust as necessary with fountain solution
n.     Set up delivery, including vacuum wheels, jogging paddles, insert skid
o.     Run up make ready sheets, rule up and fold down to assure correct layout & pagination

Demonstrate the ability to start up and operate the press efficiently, including:
a.     Adjust ink/water balance
b.     Set and adjust ink density to achieve target densities
c.     Match ink density of printed piece to samples or proofs or density standards
d.     Measure ink density using the densitometer
e.     Bring process color and composite color into registration
f.      Measure registration using registration targets and dot alignment both with unaided eye and magnifying lens
g.     Adjust spray powder to prevent offsetting with minimum powder carry
h.     Examine press sheets on the fly for normal and special variation including:

  1. scumming
  2. hickeys
  3.  marking
  4. tinting
  5. slurring
  6.  linting
  7.  piling
  8. emulsification
  9. picking
  10. excessive spray powder
  11. coating distribution

Stack or palletize delivered sheets to assure against offsetting and other damage.
Demonstrate the ability to thoroughly clean up the press including washing blankets, blanket cylinders, impression cylinders and other areas of the press which are identified in the operating manual as requiring cleaning.
Demonstrate the ability to perform preventative maintenance including lubrication, roller inspection and deglazing, new blanket preparation, clean water tanks, make roller changes, etc.

Troubleshoot mechanical and printing issues. Make adjustments and corrections to meet production and quality standards

QUALIFICATIONS:

Previous Press Operator experience A MUST
Mechanically inclined, detail-oriented, quality conscious, sense of urgency, ability to work with deadlines.
Understanding of the offset printing industry
Ability to perform all key responsibilities listed above
Self-starter, energetic, with a positive attitude toward the job
